ArbDB Member, Michael Cover, acted as a Judge at the 9th Vis East Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong.  This event, held between 19 to 25 March 2012, brought together 91 teams from universities and law colleges from every continent.  The competition involved the teams battling it out in mock arbitrations in front of real international arbitrators in an initial pool stage, followed by knockout rounds to the Final Round.  Marks were awarded for organization and preparation, presentation, structure of the arguments and handling questions and legal reasoning.

The Competition used the new CIETAC (China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission) Arbitration Rules, which are due to come in to force very shortly.  The winners were the host university, City University of Hong Kong, Law School - last year’s winners, Bond University of Australia, having gone out in the quarter finals.

Michael commented: "Once again, I was delighted to have the opportunity to act as a judge in an international competition, this time for arbitration.  The participants were all already winners, in that they had made it through to be in their teams and possibly also engaged in pre-moot competitions.  We saw written Memoranda and oral presentations of the highest quality and this bodes well for the future of international arbitration, with students such as these participants progressing to qualify as lawyers and ultimately act as arbitrators."
