The inaugural Arbitration Weekend of the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators was held over the weekend of 16-18 January 2015 at the offices of global law firm, Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP, at Adelaide House, London Bridge in the City of London. The Worshipful Company of Arbitrators is delighted to recognize the support given by Berwin Leighton Paisner in hosting the Arbitration Weekend and providing amazing logistical support and a reception on the Saturday evening. The Company is also grateful to the other sponsors, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, which provided financial support, and ArbDB, the Arbitration, Mediation and Dispute Board Chambers, which provided the Competition Mugs and also supported the Competition Bar, and to the Members of the Company and others who gave freely of their time to act as arbitrators, witnesses and members of the Organising Committee.
A very strong entry this inaugural year was provided by participants from 10 teams from UK Universities and Law Schools and trainees and pupils from leading law firms and barristers’ chambers. These were:
· City University London
· Queen’s University Belfast
· The University of Law Birmingham
· Norton Rose Fulbright
· 4 New Square
· The University of the West of England
· Berwin Leighton Paisner
· Atkin Chambers
· Keating Chambers
The Master of the Company, Professor John Uff QC, and colleagues from King’s College London had devised an international arbitration scenario, based on a real case, which ran from an application to an Emergency Arbitrator through to an Award on the Merits and submissions on costs. Teams from the Universities and Law Schools and the trainee lawyers competed as advocates in this real-time international commercial arbitration. The roles of witnesses of fact and expert witnesses were played by Members of the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators and the Academy of Experts, mustered by Liveryman Dr Chris McArdle of the Organising Committee, who is also the Chairman of the Academy of Experts.
The Emergency Arbitrator was Nicholas Fletcher QC of 4 New Square and the Arbitral Tribunal was Dr Robert Gaitskell QC (Chairman) of Keating Chambers, Carol Mulcahy of Berwin Leighton Paisner and Paul Rose of ArbDB, Robert and Paul both being Liverymen of the Company.
The prizes were presented by the Master, Professor John Uff QC.
The Results were:
· Best Individual Advocate voted by delegates (teams)- KATHERINE DEL MAR (4 NEW SQUARE)= HARRY SMITH (KEATING CHAMBERS)
· Best Individual Advocate voted by the Arbitrators- AYAZ IBRAHIMOV (NORTON ROSE FULBRIGHT)
· Best Team voted by all participants (delegates, teams, organizing committee and officials)- 4 NEW SQUARE
· The Berwin Leighton Paisner Prize for the Best University or Law School- CITY UNIVERSITY LONDON The Berwin Leighton Paisner Internship- MATTHIUS CHEUNG
All the participants received Certificates of Attendance signed by the Master, Professor John Uff QC.
The Company is indebted to all of the sponsors, particularly Berwin Leighton Paisner, for their support, without which this all would not have been possible. Above all, the Company is indebted to the participating students, trainee lawyers and their coaches, all of whom gave up their time and, in some cases, used their own resources to be able to be present.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we are all very much looking forward to the next Arbitration Weekend.
