ArbDB Member, Michael Cover, acted as Judges at the 7th ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition which was held in Paris from Friday 3 to Wednesday 8 February 2012.
This excellent competition, won by South Texas College of Law, brought together 66 University Teams from 32 countries, pitting their skills against each other in mock mediations in front of leading professional mediators. The focus of the Competition was the effective combination of the use of the mediator, active listening and responding and client representation and teamwork. For each mediation the teams fielded two students, one playing the role of the client and the other the client’s lawyer.
Michael commented: ‘We were delighted to have the opportunity to act as Judges and Mediator in this Competition and to contribute to what might be seen as the development of an international model of mediation. There are close parallels with the way that international arbitration began to develop around 50 years ago, again featuring a significant contribution from the ICC, and this is enormously encouraging. It was a great pleasure to be part of an event that demonstrates that there is so much young talent in the legal world which will provide assurance that mediation is in good hands in the future. ‘
